Selvedge are neglected on a rug however they are part of the main structure and incredibly important to maintain. It is used to keep the weft in place when weaving the rugs. Similarly to the fringes, when loosen it can start a domino effect causing a greater issue the rugs structure. The binding of the selvedgev can come loose due to everyday feet traffic leading to the selvages fraying and becoming damaged.

At Carpets Clinic, we are able to stop the rug from loosening and becoming more damaged by replacing the old selvage with a new one. The new selvedge would be made of the same material and colour as the previous one in order to keep the originality of the rug.
